This FAQ explains the changes being made to modernise EBCS, improve communication and systems, update coaching materials, and provide more effective support for members, coaches, Trainers, Assessors and bowlers.

Executive Committee
Who is currently running EBCS?
The Society is being overseen by the Pro Tem Executive Committee:

The Website
What does the new website include?
The new website launched on 1 October 2026. It includes a new member system, online membership registration and record updates, tailored access for Trainers and Assessors, online manuals, DBS and safeguarding information, ordering for the new coaching top, and automated renewal reminders.
Are there separate public and member areas?
Yes. Registered coaches have secure access to coaching materials and their personal information, while members of the public can view general information only.
Do I need to register?
Yes. All coaches need to register to see the coach-only information and resources. Registering also helps us keep your details up to date and makes sure you receive important coaching communications.
Membership Records
Why weren’t some members receiving emails?
The old email database was no longer reliable. The new website keeps its own up-to-date email list, built from the details you give when you register, so please register and check your details are correct.
New Coaching Manuals
When will the new manuals be available?
Before releasing the Level 1 and Level 2 manuals, EBCS needs to establish a sufficient pool of Trainers and Assessors who understand the new national programme. The Board has therefore decided to delay publication until enough suitably prepared Trainers and Assessors are available.
From 1 October 2026, interim coaching guides are available to all registered coaches in My Resources. Bowlers may also apply for training from that date, and EBCS will allocate a Trainer as soon as one becomes available. This is intended as a short-term arrangement.
What’s changing in the manuals?
Level 1 qualifications remain unchanged; however, a national coaching method will be introduced. Level 2 qualifications will now include freezing the head and video analysis. Level 3 will become a more supervisory role, focusing on training, assessing and mentoring.
How do I print a manual?
EBCS manuals are protected Word booklet documents. The guide How to Download and Print an EBCS Manual in Resources explains how to download one and print it as a folded booklet.
What other coaching aids will be provided?
EBCS is producing a set of Level 1 videos demonstrating delivery line and length. PowerPoint presentation materials are also being developed for all Trainers.
Coaching Qualification
Will my current coaching qualification be changed?
Current Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications will not change.
What about other coaching levels?
Following the restructuring of the coaching framework, the other levels are no longer required and will be recorded as Level 3.
How can coaches progress to the next level?
There are three routes:
- Two years’ active coaching
- Fast Track recommendation by an Assessor
- Completion of a structured CPD programme
On completion of the Level 1 CPD programme, coaches become eligible to attend a Level 2 course. On completion of the Level 2 CPD programme, coaches will be upgraded to Level 3.
How will current Level 2 coaches receive training in video analysis and reading the head?
EBCS has prepared a short guide covering video analysis and freezing the head. It is available in My Resources to Level 3 coaches who have registered as Trainers or Assessors, so that they can pass it on to Level 2 coaches.
New Coaches Pathway
How will new coaches qualify under the new system?
They apply online, pay the coaching fee, complete training with an allocated Trainer, and are assessed once the Trainer requests it. Successful candidates then register on the website, and payments to Trainers and Assessors are automated.
DBS & Safeguarding
Do all coaches need an Enhanced DBS?
Yes. This aligns EBCS with Bowls England and EIBA requirements.
What about safeguarding training?
All coaches must complete Safeguarding Awareness training before January 2028.
As a national coaching society, EBCS must ensure that all coaches complete safeguarding awareness training that is relevant to bowls and coaching, rather than relying solely on a brief generic course. EBCS will publish details of at least two recommended courses, which coaches will be able to access from January 2027.
We recognise that a significant number of coaches may need to complete this training, so coaches have until January 2028 to complete an approved course.
Keeping Members Informed
How will members be kept up to date?
News and updates are published in the News section of this website, and important messages are emailed to registered coaches. EBCS also holds meetings with county representatives.
Counties that would like EBCS to arrange a visit should contact us with details of a suitable venue.
Coaching Top
Is there a new uniform?
Yes. The new unisex EBCS coaching top can be ordered by registered coaches through the website: sign in and choose Shop.
The introductory price is £20 including UK postage for the first 500 tops, or until 1 January 2027, whichever comes first. After that the price will be £28 including UK postage.
For a comfortable fit, we recommend going one or two sizes bigger than your current tops. The size chart is shown in the shop.
Finance & Administration
What financial improvements are being made?
Clearer breakdowns of course income, improved banking processes, and an updated expenses policy.
Why has the Board purchased a Copilot licence?
To support the ongoing development and modernisation work across the scheme.
Constitution Review
Why is the constitution being reviewed?
To ensure it remains fit for purpose and supports the long-term goals of EBCS.
When will members see the new version?
A full update will be shared once the review is complete, and the new constitution will be presented at an AGM for approval.
Trainer, Assessor & Area Coach Roles
Who can apply to become a Trainer or Assessor?
Level 2 and Level 3 coaches may apply. Sign in, go to My Profile and tick the relevant box or boxes under Volunteer for EBCS.
Who can apply to be an Area Coach?
Level 3 coaches and experienced Level 2 coaches. Just tick the Area Coach box under Volunteer for EBCS on My Profile.
